Meet the monkey puppets

Michael Zandl

 

Michael Zandl was born 1989 in Austria. Already as a child he was fascinated by the abilities of the human body and started to juggle in a young age. After finishing his natural science studies in Vienna, he decided to follow his dream and turn his long-term passion for circus into his profession.

 

He moved to Rotterdam to study circus-arts at 'Codarts - Hogeschool voor de Kunsten', where he graduated from in June 2017. For his outstanding graduation performance and study results he was awarded with the MARC JONKERSPRIJS.

During his career he had the honor to perform in many big productions, and work amongst others with renowned directors  like Roberto Magro (La Central del Circ) or Ed Wubbe (Scapino-Ballet Rotterdam). In May 2017 he had the honor to be selected amongst more than 400 applicants for YOUNG STAGE Festival in Basel.



Friederike Kohring

 

Friederike Kohring comes from the south of germany. She joined the youth circus Waldoni in Darmstadt, Germany when she was ten years old. From on then she developed her circus skills in various ways next to normal school, her main focus was on partner acrobatics, chinese pole, acrobatics and tightwire. She joined various productions with “Circus Projekt Waldoni” until she graduated from highschool in 2013 and entered the Circusschool Codarts, Rotterdam(NL).

Friederike graduated with a BA Circus Arts degree from Codarts, Rotterdam in 2017, specialising in partner acrobatics and Chinese Pole. Furthermore she developed a unique combination of chinese pole and hair hanging in Codarts.

During her time in Codarts she has done various production. To point out the most important onces: Autumn 2014 Circunstruction, Summer 2015 Julia- by Rotterdam Philarmonics and 2016 Ting- by Scapino Ballett. After graduating she moved back to Darmstadt, Germany, taught in various youth circus productions and created the first part of “Camouflage” with Captain Sugar and the monkey puppets in Breda (NL).



Jóakim Meyvant Kvaran

 

Jóakim in a circus performer from Reykjavík, Iceland. He has been a member of Iceland's only professional circus company since it's foundation in 2007.  With Sirkus Íslands he has performed a variety of different acts and in 2013 he moved to Rotterdam to study circus arts at a higher level, where he specialised in Chinese Pole and acrobatics.  Over the years he has performed all across Iceland with a traveling circus show as well as been a part of major productions with the National Opera, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam and Rotterdams Philharmonics Orchestra to name a few. After graduation his main goal has been to create the show Camouflage with the recently formed company Captain Sugar and the Monkey Puppets.



Eyrun Ævarsdóttir

 

Eyrún is an Icelandic circus artist. She became a member of Sirkus Íslands, the first circus company in Iceland, shortly after its foundation in 2007. Gaining a base of circus skills training with the company, she focused mostly on aerial acrobatics.  Eyrún graduated with a BA Circus Arts degree from Codarts, Rotterdam in 2016, specialising in aerial rope and floor acrobatics.

She has performed in every major production of Sirkus Íslands since its first one in 2009, including national touring with the company in a circus tent in 2014, 2015 and 2017. She performed as a circus artist in the Icelandic Opera’s production of La Bohéme in 2012. She was a key puppet master in the summer production of the wildly popular children’s theatre Brúðubíllinn in 2012. Since her graduation from Codarts she has been a part of the cast and organising team of the largest Sirkus Íslands production yet, family show Róló, that premiered in summer 2017. She is a teacher at Sirkus Íslands’ youth circus and directed the end of semester showcase in spring 2017. She created the first part of “Camouflage” with Captain Sugar and the Monkey Puppets in autumn 2017.



Leon Börgens

 

Leon Börgens is a circus artist, performer and dancer. After inspiring travels around south america and studies in scenographie and philosophie, he started his education as a circus artist at the circus school Carampa in Madrid. Here, he specialized as base in hand to hand acrobatics and chinese pole. He continued his studies at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque (ESAC) in Brussels and graduated (BA) in 2017.

Together with his partner Leonardo Garcia they work as a dynamic and very mouvement orientated duo “LeonoLeo”. They already realised various projects with directors such as Roberto Magro, Marcus van Wachtel (CRECE), Charlie Dégotte (Revue Fantastique) and Catherine Diverrès (Blowin'). In 2018 they integrate the dance company Overhead Project for the production “My Body Is Your Body” and are also currently working for the new production of the english company Joli Vyann.

Beginning of 2018 Leon also joins the circus collective Captain Sugar to continue the creation of the colourful show Camouflage. Previously they performed together their famous duo in the show TING! by Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.
